Ever Wonder Just Where Social Workers Are Working?

According to the U.S. Government, Social Workers were employed in approximately 562,000 jobs in 2004. Ninety percent of these jobs were in the health care and social assistance sectors, in addition to State and local government agencies, primarily in departments of health and human services. Below are social work employment figures for the year 2004 by area of practice.

Child, family, and school social workers 272,000
Mental health and substance abuse social workers 116,000
Medical and public health social workers 110,000
Social workers, all other 64,000
